Abbey Stewards

Stewarding at Wymondham Abbey

Can you help?

Wymondham Abbey gets over 20,000 casual visitors every year. With the new Heritage Lottery-funded proposals now taking shape, this number is set to increase. As well as being the town’s Anglican parish church, the Abbey is also a Wymondham icon and one of the principal local attractions for tourists and visitors from far and wide. But keeping the Abbey open is quite a challenge. At least two volunteers are required, one to greet people at the stewards’ desk, the other to serve in the shop under the tower.  Can you help?

The Abbey opens daily in winter from 10am to 3pm, in spring and autumn until 4pm, and during the summer months from 10am to 5pm. Sunday afternoon opening times, summer only, are 1.45 to 4.45 (to coincide with the arrival of MNR trains). As a steward, you will get to meet interesting people from all over the world in a most inspiring setting. It is even quite warm in winter! The commitment is very flexible and does not require either regular fixed times or long lonely stints. A signing-up sheet is kept at the back of the church, and stewards and shop assistants sign in for two-hour sessions.
